Ethnobotanical History
Communities of Origin
Molecular biology has not confirmed this hypothesis but has distinguished three groups differing in their ecological specificity. C. purpurea spartinae is representative G3 — salt marsh grasses (Spartina, Distichlis). Spartina marshes were sampled and discovered to have ergot infections in the San Francisco Estuary and Pacific Coast.
